Other news and notes

Missing in action prospect Rafael Gonzalez made his first appearance of the year two nights ago. Glad he is back. He may have the best stuff in the system for a guy who isnt named Homer Bailey. He is playing with Billings this season.

Logan Parker is 7-10 on the season. Not a bad start to your professional career.

Chris Gruler appeared in a game yesterday for the GCL Reds. He went 2 innings without allowing a run.

Lookouts' Bailey doesn't miss a beat
Former first-round pick makes impressive Double-A debut

Homer Bailey was impressive in his Double-A debut, allowing five hits in six scoreless innings as the Chattanooga Lookouts blanked the Carolina Mudcats, 7-0, on Thursday at BellSouth Park.

Bailey (1-0), the top prospect in the Cincinnati organization, retired the first five batters he faced. He finished his 98-pitch outing by hitting 98 mph on the radar gun.

The 20-year-old right-hander struck out seven without issuing a walk in his first start since a promotion from Class A Advanced Sarasota. In the Florida State League, the former first-round draft pick was 3-5 with a 3.31 ERA, allowing only 49 hits in 70 2/3 innings.

Before the game, Bailey and teammate Joey Votto were named to the roster for next month's XM Satellite Futures Game in Pittsburgh.

Carlos Guevara, Matt Belisle and Jon Coutlangus each pitched a scoreless inning to secure the win.

The Lookouts (3-1) scored a run in both the first and third against Mudcats starter Mannyl Olivera (3-4). In the opening inning, Noochie Varner's RBI single brought in Javon Moran and in the third, Miguel Perez's sacrifice fly plated Javier Colina.

Olivera went four innings, giving up two runs on six hits while striking out three and issuing three walks.

James Russ relieved Olivera and didn't fare any better, surrendering three runs -- all driven in by Rick Asadoorian -- on five hits in 2 1/3 innings.

Patrick Arlis collected two doubles for the Mudcats (1-3), who have lost three straight.
