Chris Valaika broke the Pioneer League record by extending his hitting streak to 31 games Friday night, but the Billings Mustangs were beaten by the Orem Owlz, 5-4.

The 21-year-old shortstop singled in the first inning to eclipse the mark set by Great Falls' Ricardo Nanita from June 18-July 20, 2003. Valaika's streak is the longest in the Minor Leagues since David Doster hit in 32 straight games for Triple-A Fresno in 2004.

Valaika also led off the eighth with a single and was 2-for-4. During the streak, he is hitting .378 with 10 doubles, three triples, four homers, 29 runs scored and 34 RBIs. He leads the league with 81 hits, 56 RBIs and 54 runs scored.
