Does anyone know how to use these well

I hate this thing!
I want this thing to look quite a bit different, but this thing uses the wierdest code stuff ever. Why cant they just use html or something? Anyways, if anyone knows of an editor or something that will allow me to set this page up with the right colors and pictures everywhere, that is free, please let me know.
