Little Minor league news

  • Jeff Stevens, 2005 6th round draft pick was traded to the Cleveland Indians yesterday to complete the deal for Brandon Phillips that took place in the middle of April. If the Indians were interested in Stevens, they had to wait until at least 1 year after he was drafted to get him. MLB does not allowe draft picks to be traded until 1 year after they are drafted.
  • Matt Belisle is scheduled to pitch in Dayton on Thursday for a rehab assignment on his way back from the DL.
  • Justin Curry, the Reds 33rd round pick this year, who had a scholarship to play football at North Carolina has notified UNC that he will not be attending school there to persue a baseball career. However, he will not be signing with the Reds right away. He was drafted with the "draft and follow" idea and will be attending Young Harris Junior College. When a player goes to JC, he is eligible to sign a contract from the previous years draft up to 1 week before the following draft, or 48 hours after his last JC game is played, whichever comes last. It sounds like he wants to sign with the Reds, so hopefully this works out well for them.
