"USC" DOESN'T MEAN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA HERE: If there is a slight "Gamecock" vibe in the Phoenix dugout, it's not surprising. Four members of the Desert Dogs roster came out of the University of South Carolina: relievers Marcus McBeth (Oakland) and Jon Coutlangus (Cincinnati), second baseman Kevin Melillo (Oakland) and catcher Landon Powell (Oakland). Adding to the coincidence -- or even irony -- is the connection between McBeth and Coutlangus. McBeth was the Gamecocks' starting center fielder until he was drafted by the Athletics in the fourth round of 2001. At that point, Coutlangus transferred to South Carolina and took McBeth's spot in center before being drafted by San Francisco in the 19th round of 2003 (he was a savvy waiver claim by the Reds this past spring). Both underwent conversions from center field to the mound in 2005 and are now top relief prospects in their organizations.
STRAIT UP: Outfielder Cody Strait of the Cincinnati Reds was the AFL Player of the Week, hitting .444 (8-for-18) with six runs scored, seven RBIs and four steals. The speedy Strait, who swiped 50 bases during the regular season, posted a .722 slugging percentage in that span. He's tied for the league lead with six steals.
WHO'S HOT: Ben Zobrist of Tampa Bay had scored 14 runs to rank third in the league, one behind second-place Cannon. He was hitting .311 with 10 RBIs. Jordan DeJong (Blue Jays) had three wins, tying him for the league lead. Closer Marcus McBeth, who earned the save in the Rising Stars Showcase, had two saves on the season. Blue Jays prospects Dustin McGowan and Kyle Yates (1.86) were both on top of the league with 13 strikeouts. Coutlangus' 1.69 ERA earned him a spot on the Rising Stars roster, as did Oakland's Mike Mitchell's identical ERA.
Cody Strait went 1-5 with a double
Cody Strait went 1-5 with 3 RBI and his 6th stolen base in 6 attempts.

Wow, what a game today. The Phoenix Desert Dogs scored 14 runs before allowing a run. They wound up winning the game 23-9. A Red played a major part in that score, but not in a good way. Tyler Pelland allowed 8 runs on 4 hits, 4 walks, 2 HR and 3 strikeouts in 1.2 innings. Jon Coutlangus went 0.1 innings, allowed 1 HR, a grand slam but was only charged for 1 run, the others went to Pelland. On the offensive side it looked like this for the Reds prospects.
Cody Strait went 1-6 with a run
(Joy R. Absalon/MLB.com)
Offensive Player of the WeekThe highlight of Strait's recent hot stretch came during Saturday's 11-8 win against the Scottsdale Scorpions. With one on and one out in the seventh inning, the Texas native launched his first homer of the AFL season to give the Desert Dogs a lead they would not relinquish. Strait currently ranks third in the league in average (.382), fifth in on-base percentage (.476) and second in stolen bases (5).
Cody Strait went 0-3 with an RBI
Cody Strait went 1-4 with a HR and 3 RBI
The 23-year-old from Texas displayed his five-tool skills last year for Class A Advanced Sarasota, hitting .258 with 17 homers, 74 RBIs and 50 stolen bases in 131 games. But playing in the Florida State League is a different experience than facing off against the more advanced competition in the AFL.
It's early, but Strait hasn't been intimidated thus far. The 12th-round selection in the 2004 draft collected seven hits in his first 21 at-bats, leading all Reds prospects in the AFL this week. He went 2-for-5 with a double, stolen base and a run scored in Phoenix's 14-6 win over the Peoria Seguaros on Monday.
Here's how the other Reds farmhands performed during the week of Oct. 11-17:
LHP Jonathan Coutlangus -- Coutlangus shut down opposing batters this week, tossing three scoreless innings in three outings. The southpaw from Fort Lauderdale, Fla., allowed just two hits, none to left-handed batters.
LHP Phil Dumatrait -- Dumatrait started Phoenix's 7-3 win over Scottsdale on Oct. 12, allowing a run on three hits and a walk, while striking out one in two innings. It was the left-hander's first outing of the AFL.
2B Drew Anderson -- Anderson has struggled out of the gate, managing one hit with four strikeouts in his first nine at-bats.
OF Javon Moran -- Moran went 1-for-14 with four strikeouts in four games.
RHP Tyler Pelland -- Pelland tossed 2 1/3 scoreless frames in Phoenix's 11-8 loss to Scottsdale on Oct. 13. He gave up two hits but did not walk a batter while striking out one.
RHP Calvin Medlock -- After tossing a perfect inning in his AFL debut on Oct. 11, Medlock faltered in his last two outings, surrendering three runs in 3 1/3 frames.
