3 Mustangs named to Pioneer League All Star Team: Valaika League MVP

The Billings Mustangs placed a league-best three players on the Pioneer League's 2006 postseason All-Star Team, including Most Valuable Player Chris Valaika.

Valaika, a shorstop who is batting .340 with eight homers and 60 RBIs, had a 32-game hit streak stopped last Sunday. It was the longest streak in the history of the Pioneer League.

The Valencia, Calif., native joins his double-play partner, Justin Turner, and Mustangs pitcher Jordan Smith on the All-Star Team.

Casper placed two players on the team, including Pitcher of the Year Brandon Hynick.

Hynick went 4-3 this season in 12 starts with a 2.39 ERA in 64 innings pitched. The 6-foot-2 right-hander from Ohio allowed 55 hits and 17 earned runs with 70 strikeouts and eight walks.

Designated hitter Hector Gomez is also on the squad from Casper. He had a .327 batting average in 50 games with 66 hits and 35 RBIs.

Also nominated for Player of the Year and Pitcher of the Year were: Chris Errecart of Helena and Chris Carter of Great Falls, along with Sean O'Sullivan of Orem and Billings' Smith, respectively.

Other players named to the All-Star Team were catcher Andy Bouchie (Helena); first baseman Chris Carter (Great Falls); third baseman Josh Bell (Ogden); outfielders Gerrardo Parra (Missoula); Chris Pettit (Orem) and Errecart; and pitchers Osbek Castillo (Missoula), Rowdy Hardy (Idaho Falls), Hynick, Smith and O'Sullivan.

Rick Burleson of Billings was chosen as Manager for the All-Star squad. His Mustangs won the first-half North title and are ahead of Missoula and Helena for the second-half title as well.

Orem's Tom Kotchman, whose Owlz also won the first-half South title and are currently tied for first, was also named to the squad.

Joey Votto named Southern League MVP and other news and notes

Joey Votto named Southern League Most Valuable Player

The Southern League of Professional Baseball Clubs is pleased to announce that Chattanooga Lookouts' first baseman Joey Votto has been named the Most Valuable Player as voted upon by the league's field managers, radio broadcasters and print media.

A Triple Crown contender for much of the season, Votto's name appears near the top of the league leader-board in nearly every offensive category. He is currently leading the Southern League with a .313 average, 154 hits, 44 doubles, 67 extra-base hits, 82 runs scored, a .402 on-base percentage and a .539 slugging percentage. He also ranks third in the league with 76 RBI and is tied for third with 21 home runs.

This season, the 22-year-old has posted 44 multi-hit games, including eleven 3-hit games and one 4-hit game. He has driven in multiple runs on 17 occasions, including five 3-RBI games and one 4-RBI game. He enjoyed a season-high 10-game hitting streak August 7-17. He also put together a 9-game streak June 10-19 and two 8-game streaks (July 14-22 and August 22-current).

The Toronto, Ontario native was named to the Southern League's Postseason All-Star team as a first baseman. He was also the North Division's starting first baseman in the 2006 Southern League All-Star game.

Previously, Votto was named the TOPPS Southern League Player of the Month for the month of June after hitting .355 with 9 doubles, 8 home runs and 24 RBI. He was also named the BC Headache Powder Hitter of the Week for the week of June 12-18, hitting .519 with 4 home runs and 9 RBI.

Votto joins a select group of players who have won the award. Current Major League standouts Joe Crede, Carlos Delgado, Jason Kendall and Derrek Lee have all been named the Southern League's MVP in the past. Last year's winner, Delmon Young, made his Major League debut on August 29, 2006.

The Cincinnati Reds selected Votto in the second round of the 2002 draft. Prior to the season, Baseball America named him the ninth-best prospect in the Reds' organization.

Homer Bailey named #2 RHP in baseball by Baseball Prospectus

2. Homer Bailey, Reds
Age: 20.3 H/9: 6.23 BB/9: 2.99 K/9: 10.13

Really, you are looking at 1a and 1b here. If I ranked them tomorrow I might take Bailey. The next day I might go back to Hughes. The two are remarkably similar. Bailey was born about 50 days earlier than Hughes and both were 2004 first round picks out of high school. They both have classic power-pitcher builds, with Bailey at 6-foot-4, 205 pounds and Hughes a little bigger at 6-foot-5, 220. Both have electric stuff; while Bailey has a little more juice, Hughes has better command. Both began the year in the Florida State League, both dominated there, and both have had no problems adjusting to Double-A, holding opposing batters to a sub-.200 average while striking out more than a batter per inning. Both have made 25 starts, and their total numbers are nearly mirror images. Bailey has faced 560 batters, Hughes 542. Bailey has given up 96 hits, 46 walks and recorded 156 strikeouts, while Hughes has totals of 90, 34 and 163, respectively. Their immediate futures, however, couldn't be more different. Rumors in Southern Ohio have the Reds calling up Bailey to fill a rotation slot down the stretch as the Reds gun for a playoff slot, while Hughes will enjoy a peaceful offseason and is more than likely beginning next year at Triple-A Columbus. Bailey is expected to be the savior of a Reds rotation in desperate need of an ace, while Hughes will be eased into a star-studded lineup, with only the unique pressures of playing in New York on his shoulders. Flip a coin here folks, but my gut gives Hughes the wafer-thin edge.

Valaika's streak breaks record

Valaika's streak breaks record
Mustangs shortstop gets hit in 31st consecutive game
By: Marissa Rega

Chris Valaika broke the Pioneer League record by extending his hitting streak to 31 games Friday night, but the Billings Mustangs were beaten by the Orem Owlz, 5-4.

The 21-year-old shortstop singled in the first inning to eclipse the mark set by Great Falls' Ricardo Nanita from June 18-July 20, 2003. Valaika's streak is the longest in the Minor Leagues since David Doster hit in 32 straight games for Triple-A Fresno in 2004.

Valaika also led off the eighth with a single and was 2-for-4. During the streak, he is hitting .378 with 10 doubles, three triples, four homers, 29 runs scored and 34 RBIs. He leads the league with 81 hits, 56 RBIs and 54 runs scored.

Homer Bailey news, as well as news on a new ST complex

HOMER UPDATE: Homer Bailey has thrown 137 2/3 innings this season, and that's about as many as the Reds had planned for him.

But there are no plans to shut him down.

"He's going to pitch through the playoffs," Krivsky said.

Any chance he'll be up with the Reds in the September?

"I don't know," Krivsky said. "I'm not ready to say yes or no."

But it's probably a long shot.

Jason Standridge and Gary Majewski, currently in the DL, should be healthy and pitching by Sept. 1. Krivsky said Grant Balfour, on the DL all season, could possibly pitch in September as well.

So a few weeks ago, it was not going to happen and now its "I don't know"? Very interesting. Oh, and Bailey has pitched 127.2 innings, probably just a typo that was missed.

DOWN SOUTH: Efforts to build the Reds a new spring training stadium in Florida got some help Monday.

City commissioners in Sarasota voted to earmark $9 million for a new facility that would replace Ed Smith Stadium, according to the Sarasota Herald-Tribune.

The Reds, who moved their spring training and Florida Instructional League operations to Sarasota in 1998, are prepared to sign a 30-year lease if the new stadium is built. The current lease expires in 2008.

This is good news, for a while the city was not going to budge on where they were set, but hopefully things can get back on the right track with this.

Reds farm system ranked 7th in baseball?

Well according to Minorleaguenews.com they are. Before I jump in and state my opinion on the list, here is what they have to say.
Cincinnati Reds (4; Top: 13) (List)

There was a time when the Reds should have shared the theme song with WKRP In Cincinnati: "Baby if you've ever wondered whatever became of me..." Adam Dunn and Edwin Encarnacion were the only two faint heartbeats in a farm that has been largely dysfunctional and plagued by injury. This year, we can get excited about home grown talents like Chris Denorfia, Joey Votto, and Homer Bailey to help the new ownership group put that quintessential Cincinnati stamp back on the club and remove the retreads from the post-Marge era. Jay Bruce is farther down the line, but also shows some continued seeds of good development in the mix.

13. Chris Denorfia
31. Joey Votto
38. Homer Bailey

Ok, where to start, where to start......
  • The simple fact that Homer Bailey is ranked 25 spots BEHIND Chris Denorfia makes this list absolutely laughable. Homer Bailey is a top 10 prospect in all of baseball, #38 is a total laugh.
  • Joey Votto seems in the good range for him.
  • Chris Denorfia at #13....in all of baseball?! He might be #13 in the International League, but not in all of baseball. I love Denorfia, I really do. But having him come in at #13 in all of baseball is possibly the funniest thing I have seen since I saw Snakes on a Plane this past Friday.
  • Jay Bruce not making the top 50 is also a joke. The Baseball Analysts had him at #11 in all of baseball in the middle of July, and I would say that Jay should be between 10-15 and to leave him out of the top 50 makes me question how much they actually follow the minor leagues. The only thing I can understand is that they HIGHLY weigh their rankings on being in AA or AAA.
Now onto the overall list of system rankings....the Reds at #7 is very inaccurate. The Reds are a 15-20 system. The Reds have a solid top 5 prospects between Bailey, Wood, Cueto, Votto and Bruce. However after that, they start to lack some depth and it starts to get fuzzy as who goes where in a ranking system for the Reds.

You can read the entire list by clicking the link below, take it with a large grain of salt though.

Article on Chris Valaikas 26 game hitting streak

Valaika extends hit streak to 26
Singles in first inning as Mustangs edge Owlz
By Marissa Rega / Special to MLB.com

Chris Valaika extended his hitting streak to 26 games and Daniel Dorn smacked a two-run triple Saturday as the Billings Mustangs edged the Orem Owlz, 5-4, at Cobb Field.

Valaika went 1-for-4 with a single in the first inning. The 21-year-old shortstop is batting .352 during the streak with four homers, nine doubles, a triple, 32 RBIs and 22 runs scored. He leads the Pioneer League with 70 hits.

The streak is one game shy of the longest in the Minor Leagues this season. Jorge Cortes of Double-A Corpus Christi and Darnell McDonald of Triple-A Durham each hit in 27 consecutive games.

With the Owlz leading, 4-2, in the seventh, Justin Tordi scored on a wild pitch by reliever Felipe Arredondo (4-2) and Dorn tripled to right field to put the Mustangs in front.

Reliever Kevin Gunter (3-1) got the win after allowing one run on two hits over four innings with two strikeouts and a walk. Joshua Roenicke struck out two in a scoreless ninth to pick up his third straight save. Billings (15-6) swept the four-game series and extended their winning streak to seven.

Jason Louwsma hit an RBI single and Valaika scored on a wild pitch by starter Kenneth Herndon in the first to put the Mustangs ahead, 2-0.

Scott Knazek delivered an RBI single in the second and slugged a solo homer in the fourth as the Owlz (12-4), who have dropped four straight, took a 4-2 lead. Luis Rivera singled in a run in the third and Tadd Brewer added a sacrifice fly in the sixth.

News and notes

Josh Ravin, 18 year old RHP, has been promoted to the Billings Mustangs from the GCL Reds.

Michael McKennon and Drew Stubbs both suffered concussions after running into each other 2 nights ago. They will be out for at least 3 more games. Their teammate and Mustangs catcher Anthony Esquer also got a concussion last night at a collision at home plate. He will also miss a few games.

Homer Bailey pitches for the Chattanooga Lookouts tonight, as always you can listen online at www.lookouts.com.

Baseball Prospectus top 15 LHP: Travis Wood in at #14

14. Travis Wood, Reds

Age: 19.5 H/9: 7.66 BB/9: 3.63 K/9: 9.24

A second-round pick out of an Arkansas high school last year, Wood's pro debut last year bordered on stunning as he struck out 67 in 49 innings while allowing just 28 hits. Wood has two very good pitches in a 91-94 mph fastball and a plus-plus changeup, but he's also a bit on the small side and extremely raw when it comes to his mechanics and the lack of a useable breaking pitch. The progress he makes with his curveball will define his future role, and his development will require patience.

Drew Stubbs and Michael McKennon collide, get concussions

The most dramatic play of the night occurred in the seventh inning when McKennon and Stubbs collided violently in the left-center field gap chasing a ball off the bat of Luis Rivera.

The two outfielders were sprinting towards the sharply hit ball, but before either could get there, they crushed each other.

Both players laid in the outfield for several minutes with teammates and coaches attending to them before walking off on their own power.

The initial word was that each player had a concussion. McKennon was said to have a bruised left leg.

"It was a bad collision, obviously," Burleson said. "They both called for the ball at the same time, but they didn't hear each other."

It wasn't immediately known if either will be in the lineup tonight.

Article on the Mustangs and other news and notes

Ponies pitching leads way while home runs increase
As the Billings Mustangs were closing in on their first-half title in the Pioneer League's North Division, pitching coach Doug Bair was asked about his pitching staff, which was leading the league in earned run average at the time.

"Quite frankly, I have really not looked at a stat sheet in a concentrated effort to see how we stand," Bair responded at the time. "It's not that I don't care, it's just that I haven't done it. Obviously, we've won a lot of ball games, so we're doing something right.

"Whatever happens, happens and I'll try my very best to be the teacher who gets them to pitch at their very best ability. If we don't have very many walks, if we have the lowest ERA in the league, if we have more wins, more saves, etc., etc., then obviously that's not only going to make the team better, but individual players better. Hopefully, I've done my job."

Bair apparently is doing his job, whether he checks the stat sheet or not. Nearly three weeks later, as the Mustangs begin a seven-game homestand with a game tonight against the Orem Owlz, Bair's staff still tops the charts.

Entering Tuesday's games, the Mustangs' ERA was a league-best 3.67. Anytime a team's ERA is under 4.00 in the Pioneer League, things are going well. Last year, Orem led the league with a 4.16 ERA.

"We do preach pitching ahead (in the count), like any organization," Bair said. "That's the method of success, is just throwing strikes early in the count and getting the hitters to hit your pitch or swing at the pitch that you want them to hit. Obviously, that doesn't happen all the time, you don't expect that to happen all the time. Nobody's perfect. But we're going to strive for perfection, cut our walks down, get ahead of hitters and see what happens after that."

Bair is in his first season as a professional coach. After a major league career that saw him go 55-43 with 81 saves and a 3.63 ERA, he worked with high school teams and at the college level before joining the Cincinnati Reds organization this season. So far, he's having a great time.

"I love it," said Bair, who's playing career included stints with seven teams - including the Reds - and ended in 1990. "I'm really enjoying myself and enjoying the game."

Mustangs on home run tear for last month

Remember when we used this very space to point out the Mustangs' lack of home runs?

Well, that's all changed. As of July 17, the Mustangs had hit just eight home runs and ranked dead last in the eight-team league. Going into Tuesday night's game, the team had 38 home runs, which put them right in the middle of the pack.

Over the course of their last 27 games, the Mustangs have pounded 28 homers. That's quite a pace.

The team's longest drought since the barrage started with a two-homer game on July 18 has been four games. Conversely, the longest homer streak came from Aug. 6 through Aug. 11 when the team hit eight home runs over the span of six consecutive games.

Justin Turner hit three home runs in 32 at-bats last week and was named the Pioneer League player of the week.

Chris Valaika is the team's leader with eight home runs.

The article was written by Mike Scherting of the Billings Gazette

John Fay wrote this in his Reds Notebook for today

HOMER UPDATE: As well as Homer Bailey has pitched, there's a possibility his season will be coming to an end shortly.

He has thrown 123 innings this year. That's near the limit the Reds want for a 20-year-old.

"We're cognizant of it," general manager Wayne Krivsky said. "You've got to be careful about it. What you always want is 30 innings more than the year before."

Bailey threw 1032/3 innings at Single-A Dayton last year.

SEPTEMBER CALL-UPS: Krivsky hasn't decided how many players will be called up when rosters expand Sept. 1.

"When you're in the race, you bring up more," he said. "You never know when a pinch runner could help you win a game. I can tell you cost won't be a factor."

The Reds will get an influx of arms around Sept. 1 as players come off the disabled list. Right-handers Gary Majewski, Jason Standridge and Matt Belisle all should be ready by then.

Outfielder Chris Denorfia is pretty much assured of a call-up.

Other players on the 40-man roster who would be candidates: infielders Ray Olmedo and Joey Votto, outfielder Brandon Watson, left-handers Michael Gosling and Phil Dumatrait and right-handers Ramirez and Mike Burns.

FARM REPORT: Billings shortstop Chris Valaika extended his hitting streak to 22 games in the Mustangs' 6-4 win at Helena Monday. Valaika, a third-round draft choice this year, was hitting .363 with four home runs and 31 RBI during the streak.

Article on the Dragons playoff chances; Jay Bruce injury update

Article in the Dayton Daily News by Marc Katz

Dragons' playoff drive needs two big bats

Dayton Dragons outfielder B.J. Szymanski, ex-football player, Princeton University graduate and 2004 second-round Cincinnati Reds draft choice, says first baseman Habelito Hernandez tells him, "Every day is a new day, good or bad."

Szymanski is starting to have some good days, as are the Dragons, who are hunting for a Class A Midwest League playoff spot that has eluded them since 2002. They are in the midst of a four-game series with Fort Wayne for the final playoff spot in the Eastern Division.

Szymanski will probably have to hit for that to happen.

"You have to put wood on the ball," said Szymanski, who went 4-for-4 Friday, 0-for-4 with three strikeouts Saturday and 4-for-5 Sunday.

Momentum for Szymanski — indeed the Dragons — seems to be game-long, not series- or season-long. A big victory one night doesn't automatically lead to another the next. A big loss doesn't put the Dragons into a funk.

Monday night at Fort Wayne, the Dragons were three games over .500 for the seventh time this season. They were trying for their first plus-four.

"From game-to-game, it's all about mentality of a team rather than momentum," Szymanski said. "Within a game, success breeds success."

While this will not be a breakout year for Szymanski, he is quietly putting together a solid season. Sunday's outburst lifted his batting average to .251, considerable considering he never got above .200 the first month of the season. He is second on the team to Jay Bruce in both RBIs with 55 and homers with 14.

Bruce, who is resting a bruised right shoulder — "It's fine, look," he said, windmilling his arm above his head. "I have full range of motion" — should return to the lineup this week. With the two outfielders hitting, that could be enough to propel the Dragons into the playoffs.

Playoffs on their minds

• "I want to make it," Dragons catcher Craig Tatum said of the playoffs. "I don't want to play the season for nothing. You don't want to just play for yourself."

• "It's exciting," Dayton first baseman/DH Bobby Mosby said. "Everybody is upbeat. Hopefully, we can make it to the playoffs."

• "If you're a competitor and want to win, you're not concerned about yourself," Dragons manager Billy Gardner Jr. said. "When you're in a situation where you're in the hunt, you play for the team. When you're out of it, players play more for themselves."

• A year ago, every team in the Reds' minor-league system finished with a losing record except for the rookie Billings (Mont.) Mustangs, the only one of the six teams to make the playoffs.

This year, every team — Class AAA Louisville, Class AA Chattanooga, Class A Sarasota, the Dragons and Billings — except for the rookie Gulf Coast League Reds, has a winning record.

First-year director of player development Johnny Almaraz made it clear when he visited Dayton a couple weeks ago.

"I want to win," Almaraz said. He apparently means it.

Rotoworld blurb on Homer Bailey

Cincinnati - Homer Bailey is the player everyone is waiting on now, especially with Brandon Claussen (shoulder) undergoing season-ending surgery and Elizardo Ramirez getting sent down on Sunday. The 20-year-old Bailey is 7-5 with a 2.44 ERA, 80 H and 127/37 K/BB in 118 IP between Single-A Sarasota and Double-A Chattanooga this season, and he actually has a 1.14 ERA in eight starts since his promotion. His fastball-curveball combination is clearly one of the best of the minors. I don’t know that he’s actually ready for the majors, but the Reds have to chance giving him a try if they’re serious about making the playoffs. Because of his vast upside, Bailey would have to be picked up even in shallow mixed leagues if he’s recalled. …

Chief Bender Award for Reds top Minor Leaguer this year

John Fay wrote this in the Cincinnati Enquirer

The toughest thing for the Reds to do this year is pick one player for the Chief Bender Award as the club's top minor-leaguer.

Do you go with Joey Votto ? He was hitting .313 with 21 home runs and 69 RBI going into the weekend. Add in .395 on-base and .558 slugging percentages and you get an idea of what kind of year he's having at Double-A Chattanooga.

Do you go with Jay Bruce ? He was hitting .305 with 41 doubles, 16 homers and 76 RBI for Single-A Dayton.

Do you go with Homer Bailey ? He has combined to go 8-5 with a 2.44 ERA in stops at Single-A Sarasota and Chattanooga. He has allowed 80 hits and struck out 127 in 118 innings.

http://news.enquirer.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20060813/COL09/608130419/1082/SPT

My question to you is, who do you think should win it, and why?

Personally I would give it to Homer Bailey, but what about you?

Dayton Daily News Q&A with Adam Rosales

Q&A with Adam Rosales

Dragons player Adam Rosales has been on fire lately, capped off by his recent ESPN Radio Player of the Month award for July. Dragons Lore caught up with the "hard-running" shortstop to talk about his work ethic, his home run trot, and a taboo topic: his superstitions.

Dragons Lore: You have the reputation of being a workhorse. Walk me through your daily regimen to help you prepare for a game.

Adam Rosales: I go through the same routine every day. I get up at the same time, come in to the stadium at the same time-I don't like to change anything. When I'm at the stadium, I really focus on taking care of my body: I'll go through a series of stretches, take a hot water soak, and then go through a mental process to ease my mind and to remain focused.

DL: You only have about a month left in the season. What do you still hope to accomplish before the end of the year?

AR: The first goal, obviously, is to make the playoffs. We are in the thick of a playoff race, and we're giving it all we've got to win. I want to give these fans something to cheer about. They're always so supportive, and we want to be able to give back by winning.A personal goal for me is to remain focused. I've had a rough year, getting hurt while playing at high-A Sarasota and then being sent back down. When you struggle after an injury, it's a mental challenge. That's why we're here, though; we need to learn to deal with these struggles before we move up.

DL:
But you've been playing so well. I'm a little surprised when you say you're struggling; you're one of the Reds top prospects.

AR:
You know, I didn't even realize how highly I was thought of outside the Reds organization until a few days ago, when a teammate said he heard someone talk about me on a Cincinnati radio station. The phrase "top prospect" means nothing to me-the way I see it, I've been given a tremendous opportunity to play professional baseball, and it's my duty to prove myself every day. If I win a World Series some day, then you can call me a top prospect; otherwise, I'm just a player trying to make it like everyone else.

DL:
Getting away from baseball for a moment: I noticed your parents were at the game the other night. Do they come to a lot of your games?

AR: Despite their busy schedules, they try to make as many games as they can. My whole family is very supportive of me; my siblings try to fly all the way from Utah to Dayton a couple times a year. My family is the key to my life, and with their support, I always want to play my best.

DL: It's time to reveal the truth: whenever you hit a home run, you never trot around the bases. It's always a run-for-your-life sprint to home plate. Why do you do that?

AR: It all starts back to when I was 12, when I hit my first little league home run. I did a trot, and I hated it-it was so boring. Now, I'm from the Chicago area and I'm a huge Cubs fan. One day I saw Cubs outfielder Brant Brown sprint around the bases after a home run. I idolized all Cubs players, so I decided I wanted to be just like him.

I know it sounds a little weird, but running is the only way I do things-whether it's on a ground-out or when I get introduced at the beginning of the game. Fast is the only speed I know. I feel like a little kid every time I'm out there, and it's hard to control my energy and passion for the game.

DL: I hear you're a very superstitious guy. What kinds of things do you do?

AR: I must admit, I do have quite a few superstitions. I never touch the foul lines when I run to and from my position. I wear the same baseball socks the entire year. If I had a good game one night, I wear the exact same shorts the following night. I always drink from the water cooler closest to my bat.

Actually, just talking about my superstitions is a superstition, so I'd rather not go on.

DL: I understand. Is this normal in the clubhouse? Do you have the most superstitions out of anyone on the team?

AR: I don't know. We can't talk about it.

It's superstitious.

Check in with this years traded prospects

The Reds have been wheeling and dealing all year. They have traded away Travis Chick, Brandon Roberts, Jeff Stevens and Zach Ward. I figured since these guys were all Reds guys at one point, we could check in and see what they have done since their trades.

Travis Chick
3-0
2.23 ERA in 36.1 innings
2 HR allowed in 36.1 innings. (Allowed 12 HR in 86 innings with Chattanooga)

Brandon Roberts
.337/.382/.424 (AVG/OB%/SLG
18 stolen bases, 3 CS

Jeff Stevens
5-1
4.10 ERA in 41.2 innings
1.15 WHIP

Seems like these guys are all having better success with their new teams than they did with the Reds farm clubs they were with earlier this year.
